Shear nuts are cone nuts with a hexagonal gripping point. They are designed with an intentional flaw to snap the hexagonal head off once the maximum torque is reached. Leaving behind a protective cone nut that cannot be easily removed.

Breakaway nuts are typically used in public areas (schools, hospitals, etc.) and the fencing industry, such as for security perimeter fencing and the automotive industry, to prevent unauthorised tampering or removal of equipment or facilities. It can be used anywhere a permanent fix is required.
